note the current price action vs. the rising bottoms trendline on the weekly chart, and note the PnF chart in this link -

http://stockcharts.com/gallery/gv?fcx

the PnF chart remains in a bullish configuration for now
today's low tested the 50-day sma

today's low is marked to show proximity to horizontal support...this zone also mentioned earlier in this thread ...note the structure of the upper BB as this horizontal zone is approached....and the Williams bounce -

FCX has been a beauty for swing trading the price channel..there have been several major price channels for swing trading since the end of 2002.

toward the end of Sally's article, she addresses the bull run in commodities -

http://hamzeianalytics.blogspot.com/2007/02/s-and-commodity-prices.html

this repeats thoughts expressed by others such as Eric Bolling of the Nymex that commodities are in the early years of what history shows are 11 or 12 year bull runs in commodities (btw, Eric has stated on numerous occasions to avoid FCX because gold plays are better bets in his opinion than copper plays...he does not seem to think a bottom in housing has yet stabilized)

FCX shareholder vote for the PD merger is coming up on March 14...see link under "what's new"on home page

http://www.fcx.com/

FCX will become even more of a copper-oriented play with the PD acquisition....see PD product profile at the end of this post.

copper commodity futures peaked in May 2006 over $4 when gold and other commodities/equities were peaking, and copper then retraced to establish some resistance zones in the mid to upper $3's and then the lower $3.00's..last week copper traded 2.70's or so.

I wonder about FCX post the merger...and wonder about copper's fate in the years ahead...sure right now the focus is on the "housing slowdown" and on potential lower economic growth in China, India, Asia, etc.

note the FCX uptrend off the 2000 low to the May 06 high...with one period of somewhat horizontal basing from late 2003 to late 2005 when the next breakout occured.,.that breakout price level was backtested by the 2006 low (the long-term weekly support trendline was violated by that spike low but price quickly recaptured the upsloping price channel)

the price action following the 2006 low appears to be in a somewhat horizontal or upsloping price channel...

will a FCX price breakout or breakdown from that horizontal or upsloping price channel eventually occur?

will copper prices in future years likely head back up to test the $3.30 to 3.70 price levels again...and higher? or will copper prices be long stuck in a range-bound price zone?

since the 2006 low for FCX, higher highs and higher lows control the price pattern.

Monday's test and close above the $61.78 November high failed when price immediately reversed when equities declined on Tuesday's market selloff.

http://stockcharts.com/charts/gallery.html?fcx

this recent action is market related, but what was price action thru Monday's close attempting to suggest long term about copper commodity prices, and the future potential price action for FCX once the overall market stabilizes?

Phelps Dodge Corporation engages in the production of copper, molybdenum, molybdenum-based chemicals, and continuous-cast copper rod worldwide. The company operates in two divisions, Phelps Dodge Mining Company (PDMC) and Phelps Dodge Industries (PDI). The PDMC division has five copper production segments in the United States, including Morenci, Bagdad, Sierrita, Chino/Cobre, and Tyrone; and three copper production segments in South America consisting of Candelaria/Ojos del Salado, Cerro Verde, and El Abra. These segments include open-pit mining, underground mining, sulfide ore concentrating, leaching, solution extraction, and electrowinning. In addition, the Candelaria, Ojos del Salado, Morenci, Bagdad, Sierrita, and Chino mines produce gold and silver; the Bagdad, Sierrita, and Chino mines produce molybdenum and rhenium; and the Cerro Verde mine produces molybdenum and silver. This segment also developing a copper mine in Safford, Arizona; and a copper/cobalt mine in the Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. PDMCs Manufacturing segment consists of conversion facilities, including smelters, refineries, and rod mills. It also purchases and sells copper. PDMCs Molybdenum segment produces molybdenum, with mining, roasting, and processing facilities that produce molybdenum-based chemicals, molybdenum metal powder, and metallurgical products. In addition, it roasts and/or processes material on a toll basis. The PDI division consists of Wire and Cable segment, which produces engineered products principally for the energy sector in Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

see the "Market Week in Review" section written by Gary at his website -

http://www.hedgefundmgr.blogspot.com/

excerpt -

Gold fell substantially on the week as historic investment fund speculation subsided on worries over demand from emerging market economies. Copper fell this week on worries over global demand and increased downside speculation. Copper is now 33.7% lower from euphoric highs set last year.

Natural gas, oil, gold and copper all look both fundamentally and technically weak.

3/4 Sunday -

http://stockcharts.com/charts/gallery.html?fcx

some statistics measuring the % decline from recent swing highs starting with the $60.06 early November swing high...

% decline off each swing high noted below to the immediately following swing low -

11% decline from the $60.06 swing high

21% decline from the 61.78 swing high

10% decline from the 58.56 swing high

12% decline so far from last Monday's $61.99 swing high to Friday's low

unweighted average decline including the current potentially incomplete swing cycle =

13.5% average decline from each swing high
--------

Ted Burge shows that last week's low (Tuesday and Friday lows) resides near a horizontal S/R price, with $56.43 above and $51.60 below as horizontals -

http://www.tic-tac-dough.com/YGOLDCOMPONENTSPAGE.html

---------

note the near-term rising bottoms trendline that connects the $48.56 low with the 52.65 low...will this t/l be violated by downside price action?

China Daily:
- China’s Premier Wen Jiabao today will announce measures to slow economic growth to 8% this year. Wen will propose stronger measures to control fixed-asset investment and credit growth. The Chinese government’s primary mission this year will be to restrain economic growth, and it may focus on stabilizing prices and reducing unemployment.

FCX tests 60.42 horizontal resistance today....will it become support at some future date?

Four prior approx. tests of 60.42 horizontal since December have failed to hold 60.42 as horizontal support.  Does it  make a difference that the merger with PD has now been approved and funded?

3/19 intraday

3/19

have sold entire FCX long in all portfolios

as stated before copper commodity prices have resistance zone 3.20/3.33 to 3.60/.66

will reassess FCX in a while for reentry...using $ elsewhere for now....this was a very large total position...could have kept some on the table on this potential horizontal breakout, but my trading habit is often to sell when others are buying...as in NYX and CSCO some mos. ago when they had high volume breakouts.

FCX is likely bullish while it holds above a weekly close above 60.42 horizontal

3/21 prior to market open

to consider -

for FCX to double in price requires it to go to $120+

and for CMGI bought at potential future dips to 1.50+ requires it to go to 3....

based on what I know right now, I like CMGI better than FCX -

for potential speed to a double...I will put more $ into CMGI trade at 1.50 to 1.70 dips (and or move above $2.00) than I ever will in FCX.

3/21 intraday

eyeballing 58.60/.80 to 60/60.42 or 60.80 for potential re-entry long targets...little too early to think about  bottom-picking a new long entry....much better to wait for the move down to complete, then buy again on a buy signal on the 13 minute chart.

as Jae of undergroundtrader.com says...never fight the 13-minute, which is currently on a sell since yesterday

3/23 after the market close

Jim Cramer features FCX in detail in his Mad Money show tonight and provides an upside target of $100 saying

the crowd loves this stock,

and he believes FCX will exceed analyst estimates, which he says do not currently reflect improved company earnings prospects he believes will result from the FCX/PD merger.

he also mentioned that Toyota Motors has announced it is converting to the use of copper batteries in new car mfg. as a "green initiative" and this will add to copper demand.

3/26 intraday

Copper is rising 2.0% in NY as global stockpiles declined, signaling stronger demand for the metal.

- Copper-mining capacity will grow at an average annual rate of 4.6% from 2006 through 2011, the International Copper Study Group said.
