Wow, only one on that list that is above its yearly high and most are significantly off!
Steve, I just looked through the folder list of zachs #1 stocks that you helped me create last november, here is what I see.
some up and some down with the majority up.
most were volatile.
Too my knowledge, none went bankrupt
Except for a few, a trader would have done much better had he/she added to a loser, or down position and sold into stronger rallies.
Off course, all this in hindsight....
Thanks for you continued posts..

yes, Doug, I continue to monitor and trade stocks on one of the previous Zacks #1 lists...#2 and #3 ratings remain a reasonably good rating considering Zacks evaluation considers persistency of earnings surprise and analyst estimate increases. Many stocks on the old list have continued with strong charts and consistently make new highs. One thing of interest will be the potential lagging aspect of this evaluation method for the energy sector which is currently overweighted on the #1 Zacks list. How long will it take for analysts to slow the persistency of ever increasing earnings estimates? The three-year trend of earnings increases are currently responsible for the #1 rating assigned to the sector now....how responsive Zacks' method is to potentially changing circumstances may be visible in the next 12 mos.

copy of a post I made today at another section of this site: The Zacks #1 list has been heavily weighted in energy stocks....let's see how their system worked for the energy sector based on the last time I posted their #1 list.. ..keep in mind this is the #1 list on that date and not the current #1 list for which a link is provided at the bottom of this post. There may be some significance that Zacks has changed the energy sector weighting on its # 1 list.... current Zacks #1 list has 27 energy stocks vs. the 11/04 list containing 57 energy stocks (a few which no longer exist). The other sectors with heavy weighting were 23 technology stocks, and banks and brokers with 20 stocks on the #1 list of 180 stocks. The table below shows the % gain for the Zacks #1 ranked energy sector stocks since the date I last posted the #1 list here....the % gain is from the 11/04/05 close thru 1/20/06, adjusted for splits: APC 20% gain since the 11/04/05 closing price ATLS 47 ATW 37 BRG (02) loss BJS 21 BR 19 BRG 16 BRY 23 BTU 10 CAM 31 CDIS 22 COG 15 CPNO 4 CRR 8 DVN 15 E 10 EAC (4) ENER 60 - the leading gainer on the list EOG 24 FCL 20 FTO 26 GI 14 GRP 29 HGT 11 HOC 18 HP 30 KCS 18 KWK 28 LUFK 34 MDR 36 MMR 17 MRO 19 NBR 16 NHY 12 PCZ 21 PKD 27 PTEN 8 PVA 17 RDS-B 5 REP 2 SM 22 SSL 17 STO 13 STR 6 SU 28 SUN 23 TLM 31 TSO 22 UNT 14 UPL 28 VLO 14 VPI 12 WGR 8 WMB 14 XEC 19 link to current Zacks #1 list sorted by industy...note that Zacks updates this list weekly at the free public site...usually on Sunday or Monday (daily for its paid subscribers): http://www.zacks.com/portfolios/rank/1rank.php?col_id=2&o_id=0

another cross-post from today about Zacks - Strategy spelled out below...for context I will tell you that I strongly consider Zacks picks for my tax-deferred trading accounts: 1. keep up with the picks that are added or deleted from the #1 list...and note whether they remain as #2 or #3 at Zacks...example: when CYD went from #1 to #4 on the day it topped out at its all-time high because of what that quarters earnings release revealed. 2. only buy the stock if its sector is moving well relative to other sectors I monitor...sure I miss out on some good picks this way, but I don't care. Example: I bought and have stayed with ENER most of the run except for one major swing trade, because I liked the fact it was both an alternative energy play and the broader energy sector had upside potential long-term. I felt more confident about ENER when Toyota and the US car mfrs. announced higher targets for hybrid vehicles some time ago. I sold ENER this week....after having jumped out of it for a brief time recently. BJS is another example....I bought more of it when briefing.com added it as a buy to one of its core portfolios because those adds usually bring in add'l buyers for at least a week if the sector is holding up. I have always paid attention to BJS and PTEN since "Index Trader" brought them to our attention as stocks he was trading. These examples demonstrate I do not rely on Zacks, but consider the rating...since all that really matters in the long run is whether the market anticipates a persistent and ever increasing rate of earnings growth for an individual stock. I could worry about the uncertainties next time I buy WFMI at weekly channel support....but why bother with the worry since I have the chart pattern that has been unbroken for a long time....and earnings growth trend that has not changed significantly to date. The company is opening more and larger square footage stores....going to new countries....taking innovative marketing steps that attract consumer loyalty and grow the customer base...many things that often maintain or increase earnings growth. We'll see if management can pull off ever increasing rate of growth....and how the stock performs with its weekly chart pattern, whenever the overall stock market takes a major decline. Zacks rates WFMI a 3 now.... a rating of 1, 2 or 3 are all good in my book...just because a stock is on the #1 list does not mean it outperforms something on the #2 or #3 list in my experience...tho' I consider that fact.... What I consider more than anything is the sector weighting as it changes on the Zacks # 1 list. ...notice now that the list has many more software stocks on it now than it did on 11//04/05....and less than half the no. of energy stocks on it. I can infer from this, based on earnings surprise trend and the trend in analyst earnings estimates, that software stocks recently have more upside potential than they did in November and that some energy stocks have less. 3. I probably missed some things....I need to go shovel snow for a while, so may add more later. I understand the frustration about using the list....but it is a method that attempts to quantify fundamentals that drive stock price. ....TASR is a good example...it was on the #1 list for much of the good run it had in 2003/2004...as was CYD for most of its run until it topped out near 36. The list is just a tool...and I realize it is difficult in advance to recognize which of the stocks from the list will run up vs. run down. The daily and weekly updates to the list by the Zacks service helps some with that . I notice PLA was on the list during much of its run....and the stock was moved to #3 about the same time the stock started to sell off from its all-time high.
